Samsung to begin making 7nm chips in early 2018

Samsung is reportedly preparing for the next step in the chip miniaturization process. The company already began producing 10nm chips last November, while the 14nm process has moved onto the mid-range hardware.

Now, Samsung is planning the next big step in the chip production - a switch towards 7nm manufacturing process. The report has the managing director of Samsungs LSI Division saying that the company "will maximize the advantages of EUV (extreme ultraviolet exposure equipment) in the 7-nanometer process and secure competitiveness in terms of performance and power consumption".

The 7nm production should be ready in early 2018, so the new chips will arrive in time for next years Galaxy S flagship.

TSMC is also planning to upgrade to 7nm process in 2018, while the testing is expected to begin sometime in Q2 this year. If everything goes to plan, TSMC too will be ready to supply Apple, among others, with high-end and energy-efficient chips in 2018.
